BSA Presents Andy Nations with Lifetime Achievement Award
GLEN ELLYN, IL— Andrew Hall Nations, President and CEO of B&D Industrial is the latest recipient of the Bearing Specialists Association (BSA) Lifetime Achievement Award. The presentation was made at the association’s 2013 Annual Convention May 4-7 at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Nations is the first second-generation Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. His father, John Nations, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.
B&D Industrial (known to most of BSA as Bearings & Drives) was founded in 1947, when Nations’ father, John, purchased Travis Belting & Supply in Griffin, Georgia, for $9,000! The company started as a “mom and pop” industrial distributorship. Nations literally grew up in the company, learning the ropes by working in various positions starting with shipping and delivery for Bearings and Drives before he graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in finance in 1971. From implementing the company’s first computer system in 1975 to managing various acquisitions and record growth in the 1990s, Nations has brought B&D to a new level.
Today B&D Industrial is an independent distributor and solutions provider to Original Equipment Manufacturers and companies with Maintenance, Repair and Operations needs in both heavy and light manufacturing. The original company is now part of a bigger family of divisions –B&D Industrial is parent to four specialty companies: Bearings and Drives, Scale Systems, B&D Service and Simco Technologies. The company operates in over 30 facilities in Georgia, Florida, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama, has around 350 employees and produces over $90 million in annual revenue. B&D provides high-tech, engineered offerings, with applied mechanical expertise and preventative-maintenance field services.
Nations has been an active BSA participant beginning in 1974 as a member of the Young Executives Committee and then later serving on the Long Range Convention Planning, Public Relations and Data Processing Committees. He chaired the Data Processing Committee from 1987 to 1989 and also served on the 1990 Convention Planning Committee. He was BSA’s Treasurer for three terms, 1980 – 1983 and was elected Second Vice President in 1990, moving through the chairs to serve as President 1992-93. But he didn’t disappear after serving as President. He continued to serve on the Information Technology & Supply Chain Committee 1993 – 2001 and currently serves on the Distributor/Manufacturer Relations Committee. B&D Industrial participated in the 2006 Inside Sales Pilot project and Andy served on the Board of Directors again from 1996 – 1999. He is this year’s 2013 Convention Committee Chairman and has involved many people from B&D Industrial in BSA activities, serving on committees, as committee chairmen, and even a second B&D BSA President, this year -- Linda Miller!
To be eligible for BSA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, a recipient must have been a member or participating manufacturer of BSA for at least twenty five years, attended BSA events, been actively involved in the affairs of the association and demonstrated a leadership role within the industry. Previous recipients of this award include: Wendy McDonald, BC Bearing Engineers; Jim Fitzpatrick, Sr., Bearings Specialty Company; John D. Nations, Bearings & Drives; Jamie Martin, The Timken Corporation; Denny Clark, SKF ; Dick Gipson, Gipson Bearing; Hal Allen, Allied Bearing Company; Bill Ives, BSA Legal Counsel; and Peter Negri, Jamaica Bearings.

BSA: Coaching Advice from Terry Bowden
Glen Ellyn, IL—The Bearing Specialists have enlisted one of football’s favorite sons and a winner in every sense of the word, Terry Bowden, to round out its roster of 2013 Annual Convention speakers on Tuesday evening, May 7th. From outstanding student-athlete, to National Coach of the Year, to one of college football’s leading television and radio personalities, to much sought-after keynote speaker, Terry Bowden knows what it takes to be a success at whatever he does.
At the age of 26, Bowden became the youngest head football coach in America when he was hired by Salem College in Salem, West Virginia. From 1979-82, Bowden was a graduate assistant under his legendary father, Bobby, at Florida State University. He became the first head coach in Division IA history to lead his squad to an undefeated season in his first year at the school (1993). Bowden’s perfect season garnered him numerous Coach of the Year awards, including the Walter Camp, Scripps Howard, Football News, Toyota and the Paul “Bear” Bryant award presented by the Football Writers Association. Bowden’s biggest accomplishments came at Auburn University from 1993 until 1998, where he led the Tigers to an astounding 47-16-1 mark, as well as racking up three post-season appearances (1995 Outback Bowl, 1996 Independence Bowl and the 1997 Peach Bowl). Prior to joining Auburn, Bowden served as head coach at Samford University from 1987-92. BSA 2013 Annual Convention presents “Top Gun Leadership: Never Fly Solo”
Glen Ellyn, IL—When Robert “Waldo” Waldman comes to the podium Sunday May 5th as one of the key presenters at the Bearing Specialists Association (BSA) 2013 Annual Convention at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa in Hilton Head, South Carolina, attendees will know they are in for a dynamic lesson in leadership.
Waldman’s message is straightforward: Winners never fly solo. A graduate of the Air Force Academy, Waldman is a highly decorated F-16 fighter pilot with more than 65 combat missions in Iraq and Serbia. But he’s also earned his wings in business as a top sales producer for several companies before founding his own peak performance firm, Wingman Consulting. He teaches organizations and individuals how to build trusting, revenue producing relationships with their employees, partners, and customers while sharing his experiences as a decorated combat fighter pilot and businessman.
Waldman is the perfect choice for BSA’s 2013 Convention, “We’re All in This to Win,” because he is himself a winner who knows the value of the right team. As the “world’s premier bearing industry event for authorized distributors of bearing products and services and the manufacturers of those products,” BSA’s Annual Convention is designed to strengthen and develop the essential partnership between distributor and manufacturer. Waldman believes that in today's highly competitive business world, organizations that foster trust and work as high performance partners will dodge the missiles of adversity and win. The challenge is to make your customers and your distribution chain partners your wingman, all committed to mutual success.
Lt. Col. Rob "Waldo" Waldman is the founder and president of The Patriot Group and the author of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller Never Fly Solo. BSA encourages industry leaders not to miss this key presentation.

BSA Supports Operation Military Kids
Glen Ellyn, IL—The Bearing Specialists Association (BSA) is supporting US military families through a local charity in South Carolina called Operation Military Kids. It is part of the National Operation Military Kids initiative designated to provide support to the children and youth of families that are impacted by global contingency operations. This includes those served by Army installations, Air Force, Navy and Marine bases, National Guard and Reserves and those families, children and youth who are geographically dispersed.
BSA chose the South Carolina arm of this charity to mesh with its 2013 Annual Convention May 4-7 at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The association expects to raise $3,000 for this charity. To make the bearing industry contribution to Operation Military Kids more significant, the convention committee and Board of Directors are suggesting that each member company and participating manufacturer "match" BSA's contribution of $3,000. Any donation is welcome. The goal is for 100% of all companies, members and manufacturers, to contribute.
BSA has identified a number of ways for 2013 convention attendees to lend support. First, the convention committee will be selling Mulligans for this year’s golf tournament. Golfers will be able to purchase two Mulligans, or eight per team. The price per mulligan will be $10.00. On Tuesday, May 7th BSA spouse/companions will be assembling Hero Packs for distribution to military kids. Hero Packs are a way to give military kids a big thank you for all they do and recognize these kids as heroes too. They are stuffed with goodies along with a letter of thanks and then given to military youth before a loved one is deployed.
The goals of HERO Packs are to provide fun items for children of deployed servicemen/women, and provide items to help those children communicate with that deployed parent. We invite you to take part in this event. A $20.00 donation is recommended to cover the costs of supplies for the backpacks. BSA will also be skipping centerpieces at Monday night’s reception and donating that money to Operation Military Kids.
BSA is especially proud to be supporting an effort that in turn supports US troops and their families. The association’s Educational Services Committee is working on plans to make association training materials available to Navy recruits via a training program.

Andy Andrews Addresses BSA Conference Tables Session
Glen Ellyn, IL—In a departure from previous schedules, the Bearing Specialists Association (BSA) welcomed networking and relationship building expert Andy Andrews to help set the tone for the Conference Table Session. Andrews addressed attendees and spouses in a breakfast session before the opening of the association’s traditional Conference Table Session.
Hailed by a New York Times writer as a "modern-day Will Rogers who has quietly become one of the most influential people in America," Andrews is an internationally known speaker and novelist whose combined works have sold millions of copies worldwide. His message to BSA focused on the importance of networking and relationship building between channel partners in today's ever-changing marketplace. The message was scheduled as an introduction to BSA Conference Table Sessions, short, one-on-one meetings between distributors and manufacturers to consider topics of mutual interest. These meetings are pre-scheduled on the BSA Annual Convention website to allow for advance planning and maximum results. Though they have always received high marks from convention attendees, in recent years the Conference Table Sessions have gained in importance as tight travel budgets and limited time have made other one-on-one meetings more difficult to arrange.
Andrews joined Connie Podesta and Dr. Michael Webber in a dynamic business program celebrating BSA’s 45th anniversary of successfully bringing together the top level executives of what is now a $6 billion North American bearing industry at its annual convention designed for networking and knowledge sharing.

BSA 2011 Annual Convention Features all-Star Business Programming
Glen Ellyn, IL—When attendees at the Bearing Specialists Association (BSA) 2011 Annual Convention convene April 29 – May 3 at the Hyatt Lost Pines in Lost Pines (Austin), Texas, they will be celebrating 45 years of industry leadership with an all-star business program.
“Growing Together: 45 Years Strong” will feature a trio of experts to help attendees grow professionally as well as grow their companies:
- “Growing with People:” Connie Podesta is a top-rated professional keynote speaker, executive career/life coach and one of the industry's leading experts in sales strategies, leadership development, relationships, and change. She has inspired millions of people to increase sales, attract and keep more customers, build longer-lasting, healthier relationships, strengthen their leadership skills and become more profitable and successful than they ever thought possible. Attendees will come away from her presentation with the skills and attitude they need to standout from the crowd and differentiate themselves and their organization.
- “Growing with Energy/Sustainability Opportunities:” Dr. Michael Webber is a well-known expert on clean energy; he has authored more than 75 scientific works, including a compendium of his commentary titled “Changing the Way America Thinks About Energy.” He will share his expertise on prospects for clean energy and its emerging marketplace.
- “Growing with Motivation:” Andy Andrews is an internationally known speaker and novelist whose combined works have sold millions of copies worldwide. Hailed by a New York Times writer as a "modern-day Will Rogers who has quietly become one of the most influential people in America," his message to BSA will focus on the importance of networking and relationship building between channel partners in today's ever-changing marketplace.
The business programming also calls for two additional, key presentations. Carl James, Chairman, President and CEO of BDI Group, will give attendees an update on the bearing industry from the distributor perspective including data from BSA’s annual Distributor Report. L. Jeffrey Manzagol, President of Kaydon Bearings Division, will present an update on the bearing industry from the perspective of the American Bearing Manufacturer Association. Manzagol currently serves as Chairman of the American Bearings Manufacturers Association (ABMA) and as a Vice President of the World Bearing Association (WBA).
As is always the case at BSA Annual Conventions, the association has also scheduled its Conference Table Sessions, brief, one-on-one meetings between distributors and manufacturers to consider topics of mutual interest. These meetings are pre-scheduled on the BSA Annual Convention website to allow for advance planning and maximum results.
BSA attendees regularly rank the informal networking that occurs around the convention business program as one of the key benefits of participation. Because BSA attendees are in the top echelon of the industry manufacturers and distributors, attendees believe the convention elevates the level of the networking discussions and also levels the playing field among participants.

BSA 2011 Annual Convention Celebrates 45 Years
Glen Ellyn, IL -- In 2011 the Bearing Specialists Association (BSA) will celebrate 45 years of successfully bringing together the top level executives of what is now a $5.6 billion bearing industry in an annual convention designed for networking and knowledge sharing. The association’s 2011 Annual Convention, “Growing Together: 45 Years Strong,” is planned for April 29-May 3 at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines in Lost Pines (Austin) Texas.
Despite a variety of economic and business challenges – including those of the recent recovering economy – BSA has continued to deliver unparalleled networking and problem solving within the bearing industry. In fact both the 2010 Annual Convention and the 2010 Fall Meeting set new attendance standards. BSA anticipates the same response to the 2011 Annual Convention, and attendees can expect the same outstanding programming and access to industry leaders.
Convention planning is well underway for business programs and social events to develop and enhance the industry-specific relationships that are the basis for BSA. As always, the annual event will feature important industry updates from ABMA and BSA, and the traditional Conference Tables Session featuring pre-scheduled and planned conferences between distributors and manufacturers designed to resolve issues of mutual concern, and numerous opportunities for informal networking among the industry leaders expected to attend.
