BSA 2019 Convention

Manalapan, FL / May 4-7

BSA Cares

BSA Autism Speaks Fundraiser

Greetings to all:

The 2019 BSA Convention is almost upon us and will be held in Manalapan, Florida (Palm Beach) next year. To be sure the planning committee has been hard at work with agendas and activities, my hope is that it will be a lasting memory for all “our family” of distributors and manufacturers that attend. We are a family and have been for over 53 years now. Building relationships, growing friendships, and making our industry stronger.

During the convention this year I would like to ask for your generous support in the form of monetary donations to Autism Speaks. 100% of your donation will support the Autism Speaks organization and its goals.

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects individuals and families in many different ways. This I know because my family has been affected by it -- one of our grandchildren is diagnosed with autism. Because of the generous support from people who give to Autism Speaks it is a disorder that we know more about and has made significant advancements! Of course, progress doesn’t come without much needed help. This is why I am asking for donations to “Autism Speaks” to help further their mission. Today, Autism Speaks is dedicated to advancing research into causes and better treatments for autism spectrum disorders and related conditions both through direct funding and collaboration.

Facts about Autism:

  • In 2018 the CDC determined that approximately 1 in 59 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
    • 1 in 37 boys
    • 1 in 151 girls
  • Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls.
  • Most children were still being diagnosed after age 4, though autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as age 2.
  • 31% of children with ASD have an intellectual disability (intelligence quotient [IQ] <70), 25% are in the borderline range (IQ 71–85), and 44% have IQ scores in the average to above average range (i.e., IQ >85).
  • Autism affects all ethnic and socioeconomic groups.
  • Minority groups tend to be diagnosed later and less often.
  • Early intervention affords the best opportunity to support healthy development and deliver benefits across the lifespan.
  • There is no medical detection for autism.

Why Autism Speaks is the choice to support:

Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of people with autism and their families by means of:

  • Increasing Global Understanding and Acceptance
  • Advancing Breakthroughs in Autism Research
  • Expanding Early Childhood Screening and Intervention
  • Improving the Transition to Adulthood
  • Ensuring Access to Reliable Information across the Life Span

Autism Speaks relentlessly pursues strategies that make significant progress toward the following outcomes over the next 10 years:

  • A better understanding of the causes and typology of ASD
  • Children with an autism spectrum disorder being diagnosed before the age of 2
  • Children having access to appropriate intervention, services and resources immediately following diagnosis
  • The availability of better treatments both for underlying pathology as well as co-existing conditions that decrease quality of life for those with autism
  • People with ASD and their families have transition plans that result in more independent adult life that is meaningful to the individual
  • Individuals with ASD will have effective interventions, services and supports throughout their lifetime
